“FLYING OINTMENT” HERBS

In Europe during the height of the witch-burning era, it was believed that witches (especially those of the female gender) used a special grease-based concoction known as a “flying ointment,” which enabled them to fly, with or without broomsticks, to and from their Halloween Sabbat.

Various flying ointment recipes have been handed down from generation to generation, and a number of these have appeared in magickal textbooks known as grimoires. They typically call for ingredients such as the fat of a newborn infant, chimney soot, and the blood of a bat. In addition, herbs of a poisonous and/or hallucinogenic nature are required.
